Founded in 1977, the Southwest Virginia Solid Waste Management Association (SVSWMA) has a membership of over 300 county officials, engineers, landfill managers and operators, consultants, regulators, vendors and other solid waste professionals. Although the Association's roots began in Southwest Virginia, it has spread its influence throughout the U.S., claiming members in Tennessee, Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and California.

Membership meetings, which are held quarterly in various locations, are scheduled on the second Wednesday of March, June, September, and December. These meetings feature a combination of guest speakers, solid waste equipment demonstrations, and facility tours. These meetings offer Continuing Professional Education units for those holding professional certifications.
